Artist Statement
Photography has been a spiritual endeavor for me. Through photography I am able to understand the world and make sense of my surroundings. I believe beauty in a photograph comes from rendering the ordinary in a way that inspires a deeper look into our lives to understand our motivations and desires.
I like to explore abandoned buildings, ghost towns, small cities and rural spaces. I feel at peace when I am out photographing in these places. Often, I put my camera aside to immerse myself in the space to feel the energy and absorb all that place is trying to communicate with me. This process has become very intuitive over the years and has enabled me to see beyond just the surface.
My inspirations are rooted in film. Film makers such as David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Andrei Tarkovsky and Stanley Kubrick have all been a major influence on me. Their surreal and cryptic visual story telling has been a source for my own pursuit in finding a visual language that transcends the obvious.
In the words of Minor White “At first glance a photograph can inform us. At second glance it can reach us”. To communicate a feeling in a photograph is an extraordinary undertaking and that is precisely what I want to achieve with my photographs.
